AIRBOAT TOURS ON TUG FORK RIVER

For an Adventure you’ll never forget, there’s nothing like flying down the river on an Airboat. Check them out while you’re in town, they run several trips down the river some days and you can see them stop at the Pawpaw Tree Incident Park across from the house to tell the historic tale of the Hatfield & McCoy Feud.

FIND HISTORY AROUND THE HOUSE

HATFIELD MCCOY PAWPAW TREE INCIDENT HISTORICAL LANDMARK PARK

Just across the street from the house is the Pawpaw Tree Incident Historic Landmark Park. You can see the house from the park in the picture. This is where three McCoy brothers were captured by the Hatfield clan and shot.

Click this Video and you will hear a brief telling of what went on there.

Pawpaw Tree Incident Historical Marker

A major landmark moment in the history of the Hatfield & McCoy Feuds transpired here and ended in murder. Memorialized now in a Park and Registered as a National Historic Landmark called the Pawpaw Tree Incident.

Some come in groups to hear about the infamous Hatfield & McCoy Incident…

Some just come to take in a moment and sit by the river and admire the mountainside scenery.

If you look close you can see the house from the park.

Standing on the front or side deck of the house you can see Tug Fork river, Pawpaw Tree Park and mountainside.

Can you see the Eagle sitting on the tree across the road at the park?

You might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Bald Eagle that comes to visit from time to time and if you have a zoom lens on your camera you might get some great close up pictures.

JUST UP THE HILL FROM THE HOUSE

Just a short walk BEHIND the House 0.2 miles is Buskirk Cemetary, the Final Resting Place of Sid Hatfield

SID HATFIELD’S GRAVE

Sid Hatfield was the Sheriff of Matewan in 1920 and became famous for standing up for miners and community members and against the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency when they were hired by coal companies to evict unionized miners from their homes.This is what led to shots being fired in what is now famous for Battle of Matewan or Matewan Massacre. On August 1, 1921, Hatfield was assassinated by men representing coal operators on the Welch city courthouse steps.
