The Hatfield-McCoy Trail system is legendary and one of the largest off-highway trail systems in the world with over 800 miles located in the mountains of southern West Virginia.
Matewan, WV hosts the Devil Anse Trail Head that connects to the Rockhouse Trail System and the Buffalo Mountain Trail System.

CONNECTING TRAILS
BUFFALO MOUNTAIN TRAIL
Located between Williamson, Delbarton and Matewan, West Virginia, and with direct access to those cities, this Trail has 106 total miles of trails and two trailheads with restrooms and parking. One trailhead is located south of Williamson on Route 52, and the second in Matewan.
This most historic trail of all the Hatfield-McCoy systems is popular with dirt bike riders and has the most singletrack mileage of any HMT (Hatfield McCoy Trail) system. For ATVs and UTVs, the majority of the trails are easy, so this is a good choice for mixed groups and especially groups that include dirt bikes.

DEVIL ANSE TRAIL
The Devil Anse trail links to the Buffalo Mountain and Rockhouse trail totaling over 300 miles of trails.
Also known as TRAIL 59
Located in Matewan, WV
William Anderson Hatfield was the leader of the Hatfield Clan and went by the nickname of “Devil Anse”, hence the name for the trail.
The Pawpaw Tree House is located only 0.5 miles from the Devil Anse Trail Head and you can drive your ATV/UTV on the roads in these neck of the woods.

ROCKHOUSE TRAIL
Located between the off-road friendly towns of Man and Gilbert, it consists of 89.3 miles of trails. One trailhead is just outside of Man with a two-acre parking area and restrooms.
With over 20 miles of most difficult, extremely difficult and singletrack trails, Rockhouse is great for riders looking for an “extreme” riding experience, but there are easy trails as well.

Hatfield McCoy Trail Maps
The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System is a state-sponsored program that opens riding areas and much of the land is private property so the state works with these land owners to make trails available. You don’t just grab a compass and head out. There are eight separate and distinct riding areas, with unique names and at least one trailhead each with parking, bathrooms and permits for sale.
Marked Trails
Each trail system is marked and color-coded on the maps and the trail markers:
- GREEN is the Easiest
- BLUE is More Difficult
- BLACK is Difficult
- BLACK/RED is Ugly
Dirt bikes also use the trails, but the slick and rocky conditions favor ATV’s, so there is little chance of encountering high-speed riders. A small portion of the total trail mileage is singletrack for motorcycles only. There is no chance you will mistake it for an ATV trail.

TRAIL PERMITS
Each person accessing Hatfield McCoy Trails is required to purchase a permit, passengers included.
Permits are issued by year and will expire on December 31 of the year in which it was purchased.
A trail permit sticker attaches to your helmet. Stickers are not permanent. Leave your helmet in the sun on a warm day and it will peel off pretty easily.
PERMIT RATES
- $50.00 for non-residents
- $26.50 for West Virginia residents*
*West Virginia Residency is determined by state-issued identification for all individuals 16 years of age or older. ID must be presented at the time of purchase.
If you were or are in the Military you are eligible for WV Resident Rate Permits with a Military ID.

GENERAL TRAIL RULES
- User permit required for all drivers and passengers
- Everyone must wear a DOT or Snell approved helmet and eye protection
- All operators and passengers must meet manufacturer’s minimum age and size requirements
- No one under the age of 6 is allowed on the trails under any circumstances
- Any operator or passenger under the age of 16 must be under the direct supervision and within eyesight of their parent or guardian at all times
- Obey all signs, gates and barriers, stay on marked trails
- Trails only open during daylight hours
- No littering, No camping, No fires
- No alcohol may be consumed or possessed
- No glass containers of any kind
- Be aware of oncoming traffic, particularly in blind curves and hills
- No competitions of speed, endurance or climbing ability allowed at any time without a special use permit
- Operate at reasonable speeds and under control at all times
- All machines must be equipped with a properly functioning muffler and USFS approved spark arrestor
ORV SPECIFIC RULES
- ORVs are ONLY permitted on the Bearwallow, Cabwaylingo and Ivy Branch trail systems.
- Driver and passengers are required to wear helmets.
- Driver and passengers must have valid trail permits.
- A valid driver’s license is required to operate an ORV.
- All passengers must be 8 years of age or older OR at least 6 years of age and 4 feet tall. No booster or car seats are allowed.
- Seat belts must be worn at all times. the number of passengers is limited to the number of factory installed seat belts.
- ORVs are required to have a roll cage on all most difficult (black and black/red) trails.
UTV SPECIFIC RULES
The driver and passengers of a UTV must:
- Wear helmets (DOT or SNELL approved)
- Wear seat belts at all times; the number of passengers is limited to the number of factory installed seat belts.
- Keep their hands, arms, feet, head and legs inside the vehicle at all times during operation.
- No booster seats or car seats are allowed
- Possess a valid owner’s manual for the machine being operated that is able to be produced upon request.
- Stay on designated trails. UTVs are permitted on easiest, more difficult, and select most difficult trails (signed accordingly).
- UTVs must be equipped with a steering wheel and low pressure tires.
